A week before India’s independence in 1947 BEST became an undertaking of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Till 1995 BEST was pronounced as Bombay Electricity Supply and Transport, until the name of Bombay was changed into Mumbai. As the result of this resolution its name was changed into Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport, where as Brihanmumbai refers to Greater Mumbai.
At present BEST operates as an autonomous body and provides the bus service to entire Mumbai along with the outskirt areas of Mumbai namely navi Mumbai, thane, mira road and bhayander. The buses operated by BEST have reserved seats for ladies, senior citizens, and physically disabled citizens. With an objective generating more profits by attracting more passengers especially the persons using taxis for transport, BEST has started operating air conditioned buses on few tracks.
Apart from this in its series of improvement for providing faster and safer transport facility to the citizens Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai introduced BRTS system (Bus Rapid Transport System) in 2008.
